Research - Introduction

We believe that professional medical practice should, as far as possible, be based on evidence. As professional medical practitioners we should be able to answer the question “what makes you think you can help?”. One of the great things about acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine is that it is backed up by clinical and experimental research – not just one or two papers but many thousands. This makes it by far the most highly researched complement to ordinary medicine – a sensible alternative. Here we briefly outline a little of this work.

  • Male fertility
  • Female fertility
  • Back and skeletomuscular pain
  • Other research evidence

Most doctors and articles in the media seem unaware of this evidence base and continue to imply either that it doesn’t exist or that it should be ignored. Also rarely mentioned is the fact that only about 25% of the medicine practiced in the NHS is genuinely evidence-based. Indeed, a great many accepted NHS treatments have been shown to have little or no value but are still used anyway. We feel that it is unethical to deprive people of treatments such as acupuncture where there is reasonable evidence of benefit and where modern medicine can offer little or no help or is risky.
